The early residents on the estate always had to watch the pennies, and there was, of course, little "convenience" food available.  Cheaper cuts of meat and home-grown vegetables formed the basis of most meals.During the war, the rest of the population had to follow suit when rationing and shortages came in.

You ate what you were given. I never ever knew of a varied menu for members of a family. Mum cooked the dinner and we ate it - simple. I cringe today when I hear young parents say of a three-year old, 'Oh he or she won't wear that or eat this', not understanding that we have all been brainwashed by commerce into thinking that spending money and having the latest gadgets is what makes you happy, or giving kids what they want instead of what they need is good parenting. Nothing could be further from the truth.
