Shaftesbury Road children ready for their trip to Littlehampton
Donated by Janis Chambers
Here is a pic of one of the coaches at the Green waiting to go to the Littlehampton Outing.
The children are mainly from my road (ie Shaftesbury Road, top end near Middleton Road)
I am front row 2nd from right with coat open, my sister Diane is behind me , my mum is back row standing 2nd from left.
I didn’t go that year as you had to be seven, I was 6 so it must have been 1952/3. I think my mum took me on the train and met my sister there.
I went some of the years after , some of us had to sit three to a seat. The journey was great fun. Along the route lots of people were out side their houses to wave at us . Half way the coaches stopped in the woods for us to have a wee, girls one side of the lane boys the other side. Lots of tall bracken and ferns to hide us. We were singing a lot too, ‘One Green Bottle ‘ being a favourite. Once we arrived I remember at dinner time we all had to meet on the green at Littlehampton near the fun fair and queue up to be given a cardboard box with a sandwich and drink.
Happy Days!!!!
