Colin is a member of The Croydon Airport Society so if you have an interest in planes and the early pioneers who flew them please do come along.

Men of the Wrythe update with a Talk by Margaret Thomas at 1.30pm

With the anniversary of the start of the 1st WW fast approaching The Circle Library Local History Group would like to give an update on our research into the Men of the Wrythe, local heroes who went to fight for their country. Many of them  were related and this area sent the largest proportion of men in the borough.

There will be a photographic display , a chance to look at military and census records and meet descendents of the local families.

The Delights of The River Wandle a Talk given by Bob Steele

After the recent publication of his book  River Wandle Companion and Wandle Trail Guide written with Derek Coleman,.Bob Steele will be visiting the Circle Library. Come and join us if you have an interest in any aspect of the life of the River Wandle

3rd March at 10am at The Circle Library - Getting by in Carshalton in the19th century - A Talk given by Cheryl Bailey

Come and find out how poverty affected the lives of the poorer residents of Carshalton.


12th November at 2.30pm - Men of the Wrythe Reminiscence Afternoon at the Circle Library -free entry

Come to a talk about the exhibition and meet descendents of the inhabitants of the Wrythe.

Tea and cakes included.

Visit the Circle Library and find out about the people who lived in the Wrythe Green area between 1850 and 1920 particularly looking at those who fought and died during the First World War.

The exhibition will run until the end of the year.


17th September at 2.30pm - Open House at the Circle Library- free entry

There will be a talk by Margaret Thomas on the history of the St. Helier Estate.

Interested in Local History then come along and find out about the Library's Local History Group and their latest project on the Wrythe, Carshalton including their role in the 1st World War.

   20th July at 2.30pm - A Talk by Roger Webb of the Carshalton Lavender Group.- Free Entry 

Lavender played an important part in the history of Carshalton. This talk will include some tips on how to care for your lavender plants. 

28th May at 10am - A Talk by Andrew Arnold on The Heroes of The Wrythe

Carshalton played its part in the 1st World War. A large proportion of men from the Wrythe Green area volunteered.Who are the men named on the Carshalton War Memorial? Why was the Willie Bird Memorial commissioned by the Landlord of The Cricketers Public House?

Come along and find out what happened to them.

30th April at 10am - General meeting and update on our local research project

16th April at 3pm - A Talk by John Phillips on Exploring the Historic Wandle.

Come along and discover all about the River Wandle and its long history of industry and its people.

26th March at 10am - Local History Group visit to The Wrythe.

Take a look around The Wrythe, Carshalton War Memorial, All Saints Churchyard and The Willie Bird Memorial as part of The Local History Group Project on the Wrythe Green area.

There will be no meeting at The Circle Library on this day.
