Carshalton pre 1953

Carshalton West Secondary School 1950

Carshalton

Sixty years ago I left 322 Green Wrythe Lane, Carshalton to join the Royal Navy (RN). Up until then I had lead a relatively uneventful life.  Muschamp Road was the primary school that I attended and then on to Carshalton West County Secondary Boys School.

Some odd memories of Carshalton pre 1953:

Cows grazing on the green at the Wrythe.

Prisoners of war working on a prefab building site (ex-allotments) behind the bottom end of Buckhurst Avenue.

Fishing for Sticklebacks in the river Wandle.

The old tannery on the river Wandle near where I used to “fish for tiddlers ,tadpoles etc”.

The Express Dairy yard and stables at the Wrythe Green shops.

I also remember the Eel and Pie shop at the Circle

The days I ran up to the Newsagent/Post Office to get my mum her packet of twenty Players for the day,.half a crown (2/6d) I think they were.

Photo:2nd year gymnastics display team (1950, I was just 13 at the time) Does anyone out there recognise themselves in the picture? I am front row sitting 2nd from the left, next to Len Hawkins..

I think I might be third from the left second row down.
